Fresh off the back of a resounding victory in the Listed City Of Adelaide Handicap (1400m) on April 12th, local trainer Phillip Stokes has elected to include Maybe Discreet in nominations for the 2014 RA Lee Stakes.

Claiming five wins and four places from just 16 competitive appearances so far, Maybe Discreet was a standout performer over the autumn/winter of 2013; running second by a short nose in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Stakes (1800m) before breaking through for a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing in the Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) on April 27th.

While unlucky when blocked for a run and sixth in the Listed Matrice Stakes (1200m) first-up this season, Stokes is confident the Shamardal colt’s winning form carried into the RA Lee Stakes from the City Of Adelaide Handicap will count for a lot this weekend.

Also included in nominations for the 2014 RA Lee Stakes is classy six-year-old Golden Penny.

Securing eight wins and six places from thirty-three race starts so far, Golden Penny is a seasoned veteran on the Morphettville track having claimed several impressive victories on the renowned course since debuting on track in mid-2010.

While unable to match the late pace when ninth in the Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m) last time out, the Blevic mare was unlucky to finish second when blocked for a run in the City Of Adelaide Handicap on April 12th, and will be more than a chance of success this weekend if allocated a favourable barrier.

Producing an incredible turn of foot to blast from the rear of the pack and finish third in the Queen Of The South Stakes last time out, trainers Lee and Shannon Hope have nominated Vivi Veloce for the 2014 RA Lee Stakes.

A proven performer over winter events, the More Than Ready filly strolled home to win the Group 3 National Stakes (1200m) in May of 2013 and while unable to figure in two starts over spring, has returned to racing in competitive form this time in, running on for seventh in the well-contested 1Print.com.au Fillies Handicap (1200m) prior to the Queen Of The South.

Trainer Anthony Cummings is confident in his chances of leaving South Australia one RA Lee Stakes title richer this weekend, confirming Crucial will more than likely take her position in Wednesday’s final field.

While yet to contest an event at Group level this time in, the Nadeem mare has more than earned her place as a front runner for the 2014 RA Lee Stakes in finishing third amongst classy company in the Pavilion Plate (1700m) on April 12th and returning to the winner’s circle with each in the Ferntree Gully Nissan Handicap (1600m) last time out on May 3rd.

A likely contestant over the 2014 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival, Crucial will be more than a chance with regular jockey Joseph Azzopardi likely to make the trip to South Australia this weekend.

A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 RA Lee Stakes is due to be released on Wednesday morning.
